Mr. Joe Philip is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at the Bristol Urological Institute, Southmead Hospital, Bristol. His specialist expertise is in the minimally invasive treatment for kidney stones and kidney cancer and has a busy referral practice for patients from the southwest of England and beyond.
He serves as the Stone Unit Lead at Bristol Urological Institute.
Mr. Philip undertook his higher surgical training in Merseyside (Wirral, Cheshire and Liverpool); and completed a Sub-Specialist Clinical Fellowship in Endourology and Laparoscopic Kidney surgery at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Birmingham, U.K. from 2010 to 2011 before joining the Consultant faculty at the Bristol Urological Institute, Southmead Hospital and University of Bristol in 2011.
Mr. Philip’s also undertakes laparoscopic kidney surgery through the retro-peritoneum. This enables avoidance of the peritoneum (bowel containing cavity) as he approaches the kidney from the side/back. Patients who have had previous abdominal surgery or severe kidney infections and need the kidney operated on for cancer or having lost function are referred for his specialist skills.
He also consults for general urological conditions such as:
- Raised PSA and prostate biopsies;
- Blood in the urine assessment;
- Urinary flow/ prostate problems;
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs);
- Urinary Bladder Dysfunction (including frequency, urgency, incontinence);
- Peno-Scrotal Surgery such as circumcision, epididymal cyst excision and hydrocele repair.
- Urological cancers.
